About
So you’re probably wondering who writes this blog. I’m hoping to provide full disclosure by the end of 2009, but I can tell you that I have been an ordained Southern Baptist minister since 1980 and I worked at the denominational level for quite a few years. I have also served as a missionary with the North American Mission Board, SBC, and as an independently-funded international missionary. Most of my former friends, church members, and colleagues in ministry have no idea that I have left “the ministry” and the institutional church, but I have quietly extricated myself from those things in recent months.
It has not been an easy road over the past five years, ever since reading the Jake Colsen book, So You Don’t Want to Go to Church Anymore (by Wayne Jacobsen and Dave Coleman). Soon I began listening to The God Journey podcasts with an open mind and an open Bible. My world soon turned upside down!
Imagine having one foot in the institutional church and coming to realize that I’m receiving a salary and benefits from a system I no longer believe in. I’ve now transitioned to a secular vocation, and I’m loving the sense of freedom. My decision to leave has affected everything, even my retirement account, but now I’m completely free! I thought this day would never come.
I hope you enjoy reading my thoughts and sharing my struggles as a free-range Christian!
